I've always loved writing...in fact my two favorite subjects in college were legal writing and legal research.
During this time I remembered my dream of writing and wanting to be a published author. Like many people do, I thought I needed a traditional publisher; I sent out over 50 query letters and received a lot of rejections letters.
Then one day I got a call from one of the top 5 publishing houses in New York and they said they had my manuscript on their desk and they loved it, but they had some questions for me.
I was so excited...I thought to myself: "finally my dreams are coming true"!
Since I had written a self-help book for women, they wanted to know what credentials I had. They asked me if I had a Ph.D.
I did not.
I told them I had something better than a Ph.D., I had life experience.
They told me if I had a Ph.D. they would pubish my book, but because I didn't they were not able to make me an offer.
Now you might think my dream was crushed, but it actually gave me the boost of confidence I needed.
Think about it...a major publishing house called me because my book was good and they liked it. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately), they just wanted someone with more credentials so I didn't get a book deal.
That dream remained dormant for a long time after that, but then it resurfaced again in 2011 when a friend told me I should look into self publishing on Amazon and assured me I didn't need a traditional publisher.
I took that advice and published my first book. I had no idea what I was doing and a year after I wrote that book, I looked in my account to see how many sales I had and the number was ZERO!

I couldn't believe not one person found my book in a year. So I studied everything I could about how to sell books and also how to become a bestselling author.
